Small Bedroom Ideas: How To Make Your Room Look Bigger

We were all forced to 'live' in small rooms at one point in our lives. Some of us moved from a house to an apartment, relocated to bigger cities, or grew up in a big family and had drawn the short straw when it came to sleeping arrangements. Either way, we have all been there. But, having a small bedroom does not have to be a bad thing. In fact, many people prefer having smaller bedrooms as that makes them feel safe and cozy. The problem appears when that small, safe, and cozy bedroom starts feeling cluttered and almost claustrophobic. This happens when we have the wrong layout, improper furniture, and just too much stuff. However, there is a way to get rid of this overwhelming feeling and make your room look bigger. Here's how.

Get Rid of Clutter

One of the first things you must do to make your room look bigger is get rid of clutter. Let us face it - no matter how big your room is, it will look small if it is filled with stuff. So, you know what to do - start decluttering. Imagine you are decluttering for a move, for instance. You need to keep only the essential things. And, of course, you need to keep the things you are emotionally attached to and those that are valuable (and useful). Once you do this, you will be left with items that should either be donated, sold, or thrown away.

Choose Furniture With Legs

By giving your furniture a lift, you will create a more airy and open room. Moreover, you can use the space under your 'legged' furniture to store some items too. Of course, you do not have to change every piece in your bedroom - that would be way too expensive. Instead, opt for one bigger piece, like your bed. Replace your 'floor-touching' bed for one with legs. You will be surprised just how much space (both physical and visual) this will create. As for your old bed, move it into some other, bigger room, or get your large bed ready for moving to storage. You never know when you might need it, so packing your king-size bed is always a good idea

Take Advantage of Vertical Space

If you have a small bedroom, try to think vertical. Use the space above your bed, desk, dresser. In short, use your walls. And, if necessary, use your ceiling too. This will not only add more storage space to your bedroom, but it will also draw the eye upwards and thus make the space seem visually bigger. One good room renovation is adding vertical shelves. Go for built-in ones, if you can. However, if that is not the option, try adding a tall headboard above your bed. Remember, the more vertical you go, the bigger your room will look (and feel).

Try A Light Palette

One thing that may be cluttering and decreasing the space you have in your bedroom is, believe it or not, the palette of colors. Yes, if the color of your walls, floors, carpets, curtains, furniture, decor, etc., is dark and grim-looking, your room can never look big and open. Thus, consider repainting your space entirely. White is the color that will make your room look bigger instantly. But, if that is not your thing, soft, neutral, and even pastel colors can have the same effect. Use your favorite one to repaint your walls and your furniture. And, if you want to add a pop of color, add it with pillows, throws, curtains, artwork, etc.

This one is relatively straightforward, but we feel obliged to mention it - redecorating a small room can be dangerous if you do not have enough space to move around. For instance, when repainting the walls, you may easily slip and hurt yourself. Thus, make sure you completely clear the room before you start. If you do not have a place to put the furniture, consider renting storage. Professional movers such as those at Centennial Moving can help you move anything to and from storage

Hang Mirrors

Every room can benefit from a mirror. Their purpose is to help you see what you look like, fool the eye, and make it believe that the room is bigger. This is why mirrors are essential in small bedrooms. Do not be afraid to use more of them. For instance, put a full-length mirror on your door or your closet, hang one above your dresser, or find decorative mirrors and put them over your bed or somewhere on the walls.

Moreover, the best way to visually make the room feel bigger is to put a mirror opposite your window. This will reflect a crazy amount of light and make the room brighter. Of course, you also need to have translucent window covers and curtains for this.

Be Careful With The Furniture You Choose

Big and bulky furniture pieces simply do not look good in small rooms. So, if you want your bedroom to look bigger, the best thing you can do is get yourself some new furniture. It would be best to get some custom-made pieces. Get an interior designer to measure your space and develop some ideas.

However, if hiring an interior designer and getting custom-made furniture isn't realistic, consider getting some of those multi-purpose pieces. An ottoman that serves as a table, chair, and storage space could be an excellent addition that would make your room look bigger. Browse the net to find more inspiration.
