Eco-Friendly Activities For Children

Eco-Friendly Activities For Children

Thinking about protecting our planet even during kid’s playtime is essential if you plan to teach them about the importance of sustainability. Why engage in activities that cause damage to the planet, when you can enjoy safe and entertaining activities that will be eco-friendly too? You can find a variety of sustainable projects to enjoy with your children and teach them all about the world they live in. Take a look at some of our favourites.

Make Eco Bricks

Eco Bricks

If you’re looking for a trendy and eco-friendly activity, we suggest eco-bricks. Eco bricks require minimal effort and will result in maximum satisfaction. It is one of those activities that will automatically reduce your carbon footprint by a mile. Make good use of empty plastic bottles by filling them with all the single-use packaging you’ve used in your household. You can easily make this an ongoing project to do throughout the year. Collect all your single-use plastic waste and fill the bottles with it by using the end of a spoon to push down all the packaging. Eco bricks can serve as building blocks for furniture, you can use them as a garden feature or turn it into a statue.

Craft Your Own Cloth Napkins and Handkerchiefs

Craft Your Own Cloth

We all have old ripped clothes lying in some basket, ready to be used for a chore or thrown away eventually. Instead of wasting them, you can always use old recycled clothes and replace your paper napkins by making cloth ones. Get the entire family around the table and show kids how to repurpose old clothes in the best ways. Pick materials appropriate for napkin cloths and consider making handkerchiefs too. Draw templates and cut out your napkins in various shapes to make them more interesting for the little ones. For older children, this can be a good sewing lesson too.

Making Art

Old materials are also suitable for other upcycling projects. Did you know that you can upcycle ends of dried markers? All you need to do is cut them off and soak them in water to make watercolour paint. If kids want to assist with that, make sure they use safe kid’s scissors to make the activity fun and harmless. Use old newspaper or the inside of cereal boxes as a canvas to paint on. From old crayons to empty coffee pods and packing peanuts, there's a full spectrum of materials from around the house that can be used for creative, eco-friendly arts and crafts activities you can practise with your little ones. Use them to make toys and teach your kid about being kind to our planet.

Help Create Compost

Help Create Compost

Are you already making compost at home? Why not include your youngest into it and instill good habits for the future? Use everything, from banana peels to apple cores, orange peels, and chunks of carrots and cucumbers to create compost. Composting is a practical way for child care facilities to reduce waste by doing something useful with materials that are likely to be thrown away. You can use everything from fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, and coffee grounds to create something useful. Have your kids help you collect the items that can be put into the composting bin so they can remember what’s suitable for it.

Create Homemade Playdough

Create Homemade Playdough

Considering store-bought playdough can have plenty of toxic chemicals in it. Making your own is a great sustainable activity you can enjoy with your kids. All you need to make homemade playdough is 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar, 1 cup of hot water, 1.5 tablespoons of oil, natural dye, and essential oils if you want them to smell nice. Start by combining the flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a saucepan. Slowly add the water and oil while stirring. Cook on medium heat, until the dough, begins to thicken, and don’t stop stirring. Once the dough forms a ball, remove it from heat. Wait for the dough to cool, and then knead until it’s smooth. Divide the dough into balls depending on the variety of colours you intend to use, and add a few drops of your homemade natural dye to each ball. Knead the dough again to mix in the colour. If desired, add a few drops of your favourite essential oils to give the homemade playdough some scent.

Playing with kids while thinking about the well-being of the planet is easier than ever. Just follow our tips and you’ll have a great time while also teaching your little ones about the importance of sustainability.
